This one hour (1 CE Credit) class is intended to provide legal professionals with a working knowledge of the 1031 Exchange process, and to identify potential issues and pitfalls, in order to allow for a successful exchange. In addition to reviewing the basic rules, this class provides an introduction to Reverse and Improvement Exchanges.  We will also discuss the role of the Qualified Intermediary and investor motivations for a 1031 exchange.

Steven D. Rothberg, Esquire


Steven Rothberg, Esq. is Senior Counsel to CATIC in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Formerly, he served as President of Weichert Title Group, a subsidiary of the Weichert Companies. Prior to this position, Mr. Rothberg was a Divisional President of First American Title Insurance Company, as well as a Counsel for the company. Mr. Rothberg began his career practicing law in Philadelphia, PA.


In 1994, Mr. Rothberg founded two real estate services companies, Capital 1031 Exchange Company, LLC, and Capital Real Estate IRA, LLC.


​Mr. Rothberg also began partnering in real estate development in 2004, and under the ROBO Development company, and it’s various SPE entities, has been a partner and investor in over 30 real estate projects in Philadelphia, PA.


Mr. Rothberg received his B.A., with honors, from the University of Delaware in 1987, where he served as Senior Class Vice President. He received his J.D. from the Temple University School of Law in 1990, serving as the Notes and Comments Editor of the Temple Environmental Law and Technical Journal, and a member of the Temple Law School National Trial Advocacy Team.


Mr. Rothberg is an active member of the Pennsylvania Land Title Association, and a member of the Real Estate Committees of the Philadelphia and Camden County Bar Associations. He was the 2015 Chairman of the Philadelphia Bar Association Real Estate Section and a member of the Board of Governors of the Philadelphia Bar Association. Mr. Rothberg served as an adjunct Professor of Law at Drexel Law School and has lectured on real estate law for Temple University Law School, Dickinson Law School, Rutgers Camden Law School, Seton Hall Law School, The Pennsylvania Bar Institute, The Camden County Bar Association, The New Jersey Title Academy, The Pennsylvania Land Title Association, and various industry and professional organizations.


Mr. Rothberg has served as a Member of the Zoning Board, Citizens Cabinet, and Rent Review Board of Cherry Hill Township. He is a lifetime member of the Nature Conservancy, and is a frequent volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and Philadelphia VIP.


Mr. Rothberg is the father of two young adults, Cole and Isabel.


Eric Salant, Esquire


Eric Salant, Esq. is Director of Business Development for Capital 1031 Exchange Company, LLC and Capital Real Estate IRA, LLC. He brings over 20 years experience in facilitating tax deferred exchanges, both as an attorney and Qualified Intermediary, and brings this experience to Capital’s clients. Eric’s has over 25 years experience as an attorney, representing businesses and individuals in commercial and residential real estate transactions; land use and development; project financing; and acquisitions and transfers of business assets.


Eric has spoken and lectured extensively on various Real Estate related topics including 1031 Exchanges, Surveying and Property Tax Appeals. His audiences include attorneys, accountants and Realtors, and various professional and trade organizations. He offers practical real world experience in presenting these topics before practitioners.


Eric received his BS in Marketing and Finance, magna cum laude, from the University at Albany, and his JD from St. John’s University. At St. John’s, Eric was the student Editor in Chief of the New York Real Property Law Journal, a publication of the Real Property Committee of the New York State Bar Association. He was also a member and active on committees of the Real Property Section of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and past President of the New Jersey Chapter of the St. John’s University Law School Alumni Association.


Eric’s interests include cycling, traveling and spending time with his wife, daughters and his dog, Doc. He volunteers as an Emergency Medical Technician in his community, and for human and animal rights projects.


He is admitted to practice law in New Jersey, New York and before the Federal Courts.
